Vacation Minimalists-Part #1
The family story illustrated here is what it is like going on a vacation with my family before we were Vacation Minimalists.
One day a family decided to go on a family vacation. (This always sounds like a good idea on paper, but often goes haywire when put into action.)
Our family didn’t know this at the time. As a result, paid no heed to the fact that it was going to be very difficult. So they went into the whole process of packing for eight people with a mood that it’s going to be easy. They were NOT vacation minimalists.
Packing
The job then proves difficult when kids won’t listen to mom. Kids just want to pack their own things. They don’t want to help pack for mom, dad, or little siblings. Everyone is only thinking of themselves.
Then, Mom gets frustrated, kids are stressed, and after three hours nothing is packed. They are no closer to being ready to go on their trip! Finally, somehow with much difficulty they manage to get everything packed and in the car. But the problems don’t stop there, oh no!
Traveling
Within minutes Mom and Dad start to hear: “I can’t see out.” “My feet are squished.” “Can you turn the radio up?” “Turn the radio down!” The complaining continues.
Arriving at the hotel for the night it gets much, much, worse. Everyone wants to take their own stuff in. They still doesn’t want to help anyone else with their things, and are wholly focused on themselves.
This idea of vacation minimalists is starting to sound really good.
When they finally finish paying and finding the room that they are staying in, all of the kids are still wound up like tops. They practically stampede over each other trying to be the first one in. The kids get so excited that they start all talking at once and then start yelling over each other to get what they want. They are still not caring about what anyone else wants.
Then, for the sake of everyone in the hotel (or anyone on the block for that matter!), Mom interferes. Everyone is on time-out.
What a start to a family vacation! But wait, where’s Dad in all of this? He has been going back and forth to the car for about the fifth time now just trying to get the “Basics” for the night alone…. But hold on a sec…. What are the “basics”?
To be continued….
